Home Depot Updates
Updates on the distribution network of the fourth largest employer in the United States
With the Kroger distribution network primer out this week, I’m almost done with brief primers on the distribution networks of the ten largest employers in the United States - just Albertsons to go.
Some of these primers I did before I had access to better data, and so I’m going back and doing some updates now, beginning with one for Home Depot, whose distribution network is vaster than I thought. Some of the key updates:
In the original version of my primer, I thought that Stocking Distribution Centers served double-duty as Import Distribution Centers, but in fact, Home Depot has 7 dedicated Import Distribution Centers near the ports.
In addition to smaller Market Delivery Operations, Home Depot also has much larger Market Delivery Centers that appear to supply the MDOs.
There’s now a breakout section on HD Supply, its Pro and B2B operation, including its acquisition of the flooring supplier Redi Carpet in 2023 and of the construction materials distributor SRS in 2024.
I included some employment numbers by facility type using OSHA’s 2024 ITA data, and I was surprised by how low the numbers were. The only three distribution facilities with more than 500 employees were all HD Supply DCs. I’d say that Home Depot stores have more employees on average than any of their Distribution facilities.
