Amazon is angling to take over USPS
On the company's mad scramble to build out its rural delivery network to make a semi-credible claim to be able to do what the US postal service does
Jonathan Rosenblum and I are in Truthout today on Amazon’s recent infrastructural and political moves to capitalize on potential post office privatization. Needless to say, the privatization of a crucial public service in USPS would be disastrous; no matter who takes over, privatization would undoubtedly mean reneging on USPS’s “universal service obligation,” i.e., its commitment to serving everyone and at an affordable price.
Amazon has been rushing to build out its “rural wagon wheel” network in order to make a credible claim that it could meet this obligation, but it still trails UPS and FedEx in terms of nationwide coverage, even though it surpasses both in terms of overall package volume.
